Folk dance workshop with the Pilsudski Institute of London

The Pilsudski Institute of London invites you to come learn and dance to one of Poland's national dances – the Krakowiak.

Known for its 'galop' step imitating galloping horses, the krakowiak originated as a peasant dance in the 16th century; however, in the 19th century, it became a popular dance in European ballrooms and was considered a Polish national dance. Famous musicians, including Fryderyk Chopin, composed various krakowiak pieces. Alongside the Krakowiak, five other Polish dances were seen in European ballrooms, including the: polonaise, mazur, kujawiak, oberek, even the polka.

Lidia Letkiewicz of the Pilsudski Institute will host two dance workshops on Saturday 17th of September, where dancers and non-dancers alike of all ages can join in to learn more about the history of the national dances, the costumes, as well as learning simple krakowiak choreography based on some of the basic steps like 'cwał' (galop), 'krzesany' (striking of the foot), 'kulawy' and 'porębiańska.' Dancers can join individually or with a partner.

The first session will take place from 11:00 – 12:15 for ages 4-15.
The second session will take place from 13:00 – 14:15 for ages 16+.
